We tend to think that communication is only about words. While our vocabulary is an important ingredient, we will be reminded during this session that communication is not only about what we say, but also about how we deliver the message. In fact, research suggests that our stance, our posture, the volume and tone of our delivery are even more important than we might think. To communicate effectively, we need to consider how we can best prepare our mindset and use the best words for the audience or the listening individual in mind.
During the session, we will:
• define communication, confirming our own personal responsibilities of engagement
• recognise the need to reflect on the impact of using key skills, being congruent, applying helpful behaviours, and other practical techniques
• the significance of preparing ourselves to deliver as well as the message to be conveyed
• identify support available to be ready for handling challenging conversations
