Coaching
What is coaching and how can it help?
Workplace coaching takes place on a one-to-one basis and focuses on developing an individual’s skills and confidence and on setting and reviewing goals and objectives, to improve performance in the workplace.
The role of a workplace or business coach is to:
- build a rapport and trusting relationship
- seek to understand rather than judge
- listen and advise rather than direct or jump in with solutions
- support personal and professional development
Coaches don’t give employees the answers, rather they support them to work through and find answers for themselves.
Coaching can identify organisational as well as individual goals. Employees are supported to assess their strengths alongside the areas in which they want, or indeed need, to develop and improve.

When should you undertake coaching?
The coaching process typically lasts for a defined period of time.
For example, it could take place weekly over a 2–3-month period, monthly for a period of 6-months to a year, or indeed be delivered on an ongoing basis.
The duration will also be determined by the reason or purpose for which coaching has been identified by the employer and/or employee as a professional/personal development solution.
What are the benefits?
Workplace coaching can:
- Prepare people for, and/or support them through, organisational change
- Encourage and foster self-directed learning and development
- Complement and build on internal performance management procedures
Coaching encourages communication, reflection, and self-correction. When employees are more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, they are more equipped to take on challenges and further their development.
By helping employees build soft skills such as confidence, communication, and persuasion, coaching can also improve overall employee relations and team functioning.
