World Mental Health Day 2026: Why Listening Matters

World Mental Health Day on 10 October provides an opportunity to reflect on how workplace culture shapes wellbeing. This year’s theme, ‘Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,’ highlights the importance of listening to the experiences of employees and using those insights to create meaningful change.

When people feel heard, they are more likely to engage, seek support when needed, and contribute openly to their teams.

Creating opportunities for feedback and genuine conversation can help organisations better understand what is working well and where additional support may be needed.

Mental health support is most effective when it is shaped by the people it is intended to help. By listening without judgement, acting on feedback, and creating psychologically safe environments, organisations can foster healthier, more inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Creating mentally healthy workplaces starts with listening. When employees feel heard, valued and supported, organisations are better placed to build trust, inclusion and wellbeing for all.

Create opportunities for honest feedback

Use surveys, focus groups, staff forums or wellbeing conversations to better understand employee experiences.

    Listen with curiosity, not assumptions

Recognise that people experience challenges differently and avoid assuming what support someone may need.

    Act on employee feedback

Share what you’ve heard and demonstrate how feedback is influencing decisions and wellbeing initiatives.

    Strengthen psychological safety

Encourage a culture where employees feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas and asking for support.

    Promote available supports

Regularly remind employees about counselling, coaching, wellbeing resources and other available services.
